Weekend Tune: Dylan

I’m not the biggest Bob Dylan fan, but I recently saw Martin Scorcese’s fantastic Dylan documentary, which whetted my appetite to see the new “bold, experimental” Dylan biopic, which just today won Cate Blanchett the best actress award at the Venice Film Festival, which she got for being one of six different actors to play different Dylan-like characters in the film.

So, a propos of not much at all, a bit of YouTube surfing snagged the first few minutes of Scorcese’s “No Direction Home”, the trailer for “I’m Not There”, and a great old clip – featured in the Scorcese doc – of Dylan debuting “Mr. Tambourine Man” at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival. The more famous version by the Byrds seems frozen in 1960s folk-rock amber, but Dylan’s original – simple, beautiful melody and poetic, surreal lyrics – is ageless:
